Ablind woman has had her sight restored by using retinal cells from an aborted foetus. The surgery was carried out on 64yr old Elisabeth Bryan by a team at University of Louisville Kentucky. They removed retinal cells from a 13 week aborted foetus and transplanted them on to her left eye.Now she can see well enough to read standard print books, e-mails and play computer games. The Louisville team have carried out 6 retinal implant operations on patients with AMD and RP,in todays edition of the NEW Scientist magazine they report "favourable results in 5 of the patients the most striking being Ms Bryan."
3 years ago Elisabeth Bryan was blind in her left eye and faced total permanent blindness very soon, the US team were given permission to carry out transplants on those with less advanced stages of disease which they believe will lead to even more dramatic results.
I actually saw this article and have read about the previous transplants. Thought about posting it here, but, alas, you beat me to it. Quite amazing isn't it.
Yes it is but, how do you feel about the scource of those retinal cells.
Inevitably the pro life groups are kicking up a real fuss they have threatened to stop further operations.
